Labour-intensive construction approach: Anysberg Nature Reserve

MBB completed a two-year, R 17.5 million, labour-intensive, improvements programme within the Anysburg Nature Reserve. The Anysburg Nature Reserve is located in the Klein Karoo, between the towns of Ladismith, Laingsburg, Touwsrivier and Montagu.  This project, implemented by the Department of Environmental Affairs, saw MBB appointed as the Contractor, overseeing the upgrading of the nature reserve’s gravel roads and the improvement of the reserve’s tourism facilities.

While road improvements are typically undertaken using machinery, a labour-intensive approach was adopted for the resurfacing of roadways, stormwater and erosion management, river crossings and the opening and closing of borrow areas.

The adoption of a labour-intensive initiative required “out of the box” thinking, with alternative construction methods geared towards “labour-friendly” construction being required. A systematic approach, detailed planning, managed task execution and good labour relations provided the cornerstones of this successful project.  The project business plan anticipated the creation of 95 jobs – this was exceeded with the lives of 192 participants being enriched over a two years construction period.  Selected participants received further accredited training in the operation of construction machinery.  This skills transfer process has resulted in two participants finding permanent employment within other local industries.

MBB is proud to be associated with this project, the relevant role players and of having contributed to the success of this project.
