The project aims to improve safety, accessibility, and economic growth in the community.
The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality launched a road paving project in Mlungisi Location, Komani. The project is a development set to enhance transport infrastructure, reduce travel time, and improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.
On November 11, 2025, MBB was hired to design the upgrading of the existing bitumen road to 80mm thick concrete paving blocks, the stormwater infrastructure rehabilitation, the design of road layerworks, which stabilizes the existing base layer, the recommendations for road testing and lab work, and all regulatory requirements, including those related to H&S and the environment. Significant potholing and ravelling, surfacing edge cracks in the current surface, sewer spills, and standing water as a result of inadequate drainage were some of the difficulties encountered. With the increased stormwater drainage after completion, this issue should be lessened.
The project, which began on 2nd June 2025, involves paving of a 1.1km long section of Pelem Street, cleaning the existing stormwater drainage systems, sidewalk refurbishment, cleaning water channels i.e., under the Komani River bridge, and new signage. Construction is expected to be completed by 2nd December 2025.
Residents and local businesses have welcomed the development, noting that smoother, safer roads will improve accessibility, reduce vehicle maintenance costs, and ensure that the road serves the needs of all community members.
Once complete, the Paving of Pelem Street 1.1km road paving project promises to deliver a lasting impact in Mlungisi, paving the way—literally—for safer and more efficient transport.
