MBB was appointed as civil and structural engineers for the design and construction monitoring of four 70 student 3 storey residences on Rhodes University campus. Shakuma pre-stressed flooring and reinforced concrete beams were used in the residences and due to the steep topography terraforce retaining walls >3.5m were constructed to retain soil embankment due to platforming the construction site. NH8 was constructed on an engineered platform due to prevailing soil conditions.
This not the first project MBB has completed for the University and follows on from the construction of three new residences in 2010, as well as the Barrat Lecture theatre complex 2007 and Nelson Mandela Kitchen and Dining Hall in 2003.
